Mission

Public-Holiday Projects programs group exhibitions that evolve out of the branching nature of ideas exchanged among artists. It succeeds as a less conventional forum for showing and disseminating artworks, requiring active participation and shared labor. Each project includes not only an exhibition of finished artworks, but also a means of accessing the participating artists’ intellectual and material working processes, and a publication that extends the life of the project beyond the exhibition dates. Artists who participate in Public-Holiday Projects' endeavors contribute extensive time and energy as their work is presented and archived in their own voice.

Public-Holiday Projects was conceived by three graduate students in the last semester of their MFA program in New York City as a tool to extend the collective energy of an art school environment. As we and our colleagues began to exhibit work, be written about, and generally participate in the art world at large, we realized that we wanted to play an active role in how our peer group’s work was discussed and exhibited. Public-Holiday Projects galvanizes a pre-existing, international network of artist-run and non-profit gallery spaces in order to provoke a discourse that does not hinge on international art fairs or the mega-biennial model.
