Public-Holiday Projects (PHP) is pleased to announce its participation in “WE,” a group exhibition curated by Jen Liu, opening this Saturday, July 5 at Lizabeth Oliveria Gallery in Culver City, CA. PHP’s contribution to the exhibition is the presentation of Brooklyn-based artist, Pam Lins.
“WE” examines new and ongoing developments in contemporary collaborative practices including interactive performance, self-run publishing, art objects and curatorial practices.
An artist-run curatorial initiative, PHP chose to focus its energy on working with one single artist for “WE,” as opposed to its usual mode of constructing group exhibitions. PHP enthusiastically invited Lins, a mid-career artist with a longer exhibition history to draw on than many of PHP’s prior collaborators. Lins chose to exhibit a concise cross-section of her latest work to a new audience, self-reflexively re-examining the very nature (possibilities and limitations) of exhibiting artworks in a gallery context. In “WE” Lins presents two dynamic new painting/sculpture hybrids, as well as a hypnotic, looped animation that meditates on a painting as a changeling. PHP's role as facilitator is visually manifested in the exhibition space through a wall painting that speaks to both Lins's work and the architecture of the gallery.
As with every PHP endeavor, a publication accompanies its presentation, the role of which is to provide an additional layer of information directly from the artist herself. This lo-tech, zine-style booklet piggybacks on the show’s formal press release and other forms of exhibition ephemera to further extend the artist's presence within a curated exhibition.
This project marks PHP's return from an extended hiatus following Bunch Alliance and Dissolve at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, OH which ran Fall 2006-Winter 2007. This exhibition received a full-page article in Artforum, which can be viewed along with installation images at www.publicholidayprojects.com.
